[maxgallery name=”castro-rainbow-crosswalks”]We recently walked down Castro Street in The Castro to gauge current progress on renovations outlined in the Castro Street Improvement Project. Compared to a visit in early spring, there has been significant progress on the sidewalk widening, plaque installation, tree planting, and the rainbow crosswalk painting. 22 foot wide pedestrian friendly sidewalks now line both sides of Castro Street complete with embedded LGBT hero plaques and a great number of planted trees. With three of the four crosswalks under progress, installation of the rainbow colored crosswalks is well underway at the 18th street intersection. The rainbow colors are being formed by laying strips of thick multi-colored thermoplastic paint into stamped grooves created in the freshly paved asphalt. Contractor Ghilotti Brothers Construction expects to complete the $8.3 million project this month.
