Despite all the press, you won’t find the rainbow crosswalks in Castro just yet. The crosswalk renovations are included in the Castro Street Improvement Project currently being implemented along the popular stretch of Castro Street from Market to 19th Street. The project aims to pedestrianize the street by widening sidewalks, planting trees, and repainting crosswalks. Elements celebrating LGBT freedoms such as plaques, side walk etchings, and rainbow colored crosswalks are also included in the plans. A recent area walk-by showed 6 foot wide shallow trenches along the west side curb of Castro Street from Market to 18th Street. In addition, the Castro and 18th intersection was recently painted with utility markers but there are no signs of rainbow colors. Realistically, the colors will probably grace the street once all the repaving and dirty concrete work is completed. Contractor Ghilotti Brothers Construction has an October 2014 deadline to complete the $8.3 million project.
