The re-skinning of 680 Folsom may not be as impressive as the new buildings emerging nearby, however, Boston Properties has made the most of this facelift endeavor. The original building that housed the offices of SBC Communications was recently undressed and its 60’s era precast concrete facade was stripped away. Within the last couple of months the structure’s bony steel frame had been covered in new glassy attire. Inside the newly hung glass panels a new elevator encased concrete core was added to firm up the aging frame and to support two new floors. These additional floors will increase building’s office space to 468,783 sq. feet. In addition, architect Skidmore Owings and Merrill has produced an urban contemporary styled lobby with free standing artwork, lit stairs and surrounding steel geometrically shaped gradient walls. Macy’s corporate office will get the pretty views occupying floors 8 to 14, while Riverbed Technology Inc. will watch the streets on floors 2 through 7. Judging by the building’s progress, Macy’s should be moving into their new digs by early spring.
