A core of steel and concrete is rising at the corner of Fremont and Mission streets. Encircled by vertical iron support pillars, the chunky center foundation will support a 455 ft tall building and allow the interiors of each floor to be column free. Architect Skidmore, Owings and Merril has designed a modernist styled building with an airy 50 ft. high open lobby and glassy ribbon-like facade. This shiny skin of alternating angled glass panels will endow the building with light refracting and shimmering visual effects. We are somewhat dismayed that the building’s handsomeness will be somewhat lost by its older yet taller neighbors but regardless it will be an elegant addition to the downtown area. Developer Kilroy Realty Corporation is seeking LEED Platinum certification through novel measures such as embedding plastic cups in the concrete flooring and the use of geothermal energy to maintain the lobby ambient temperatures. We expect to see rapid progress in 2014 as the building is expected to be completed by early 2015.
